Human Relationships According to IKAIKA
Humans are social animals. And it’s true—one of the things that make us unique is our ability to form relationships with others. We form relationships with almost any kind of entity, living or not.
We can form relationships with friends, partners, pets, cars, barbells, and characters in books, TV shows, and films. Relationships are an essential part of what makes us human, and we thrive on them. forming and maintaining relationships is one of the most important things we can do.
It’s how we connect with others, how we communicate, and how we interact with the world around us. While many of you reading this are, like me, more than comfortable spending time alone, we almost always thrive when we’re in the company of those nearest and dearest.
IKAIKA clients will have heard the phrase “intimate, not transactional” in conversations with us. You can get a transactional relationship almost anywhere. At the coffee shop, the supermarket, or at the gym. This is all well and good, but those relationships rarely last.
Then there are the intimate relationships we form. With our spouse, family, and close friends; maybe our doctor or other trusted professionals. These are the relationships that IKAIKA specializes in.
Where IKAIKA Thrives Like no Other Gym
We don’t lead a sea of people following a choreographed routine, so we don’t do mass-market relationships, either. We work on a one-to-one basis.
As a potential new client, you’ll sit down with us down for a chat about you, your goals and fears, and your hopes and wants. We prescribe a structured approach, starting with your most important needs (This might be nutrition, mobility, or even confidence). We call this a No-Sweat Intro.
Your fitness journey at IKAIKA will always begin with one-on-one coaching, either via a personal class or with an individually designed personal-training session.
How we Earn Your Trust at IKAIKA
This is how we earn your trust. We don’t sell you on cheap memberships and long-term contracts; we coach you with expertise and care.
You may have been burned by false promises and had unrealistic expectations foisted upon you by well-meaning but inexperienced fitness instructors. You may have been sold the dream by a nutrition program promising lifelong weight loss—as long as you’re starving yourself or buying their meal-replacement products.
4 Things to Consider When you Compare IKAIKA to Other Gyms
Number 1: Consider more than just price and location in your decision
When choosing a gym, price and location are often the deciding factors. In my opinion, a great gym with an awesome community is worth the extra 10 or 15 minutes on the road.
Working out is considered a social activity and every gym have a different culture, and you should find a gym whose coaches and clients you connect well with. I tell everyone that moves to our area to try all the CrossFit gyms before deciding which one is the best for them.
Yes, fitness can be expensive. Guess what? It can also be cheap.
But you get what you pay for. So you need to ask yourself what you’re looking for. Do you just want access to equipment and not much in the way of service or coaching? If that’s the case, then maybe the lower-priced option is good for you.
If you are new to fitness, however, I don’t recommend this route. As some of the movements can be complex and you’ll need quality coaching.
At IKAIKA, we pride ourselves on client service. We provide our clients with one-on-one personal training services, which have a higher price point. If you want a higher-value service that provides faster results than group classes, you should consider a CrossFit gym that provides one-on-one personal training.
Number 2: Ask, “Does the gym I am considering understand my goals?”
The most successful gyms should understand the wants, needs, and desires of their clients.
The best gyms in the business understand that we are in the results business. The worst gyms in the business think we are in the “get-bodies-in-the-door” business.
The path to results begins with a goal-setting session when you first walk in. We call ours a No Sweat Intro. Good gyms will ask you what your goals are. Do you want to lose weight? Gain strength? Get toned? Feel better in your skin?
Now, here’s the secret—the great gyms will ask you WHY.
Understanding the “why” is very powerful in setting any goal. Is it about more than just losing weight? Does your family have a history of chronic disease? Do you want to get stronger so you can play with your grandkids? Do you want to be able to use your fitness outside of the gym in activities like golf, swimming, kayaking, or hiking?
If no one sits down with you and talks to you about your goals and your “why,” then they don’t truly understand you. And like Dale Carnegie said, “the deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”
You deserve to find a gym that appreciates you. Schedule your FREE No-Sweat Intro with IKAIKA HERE.
Number 3: Ask, “Do the CrossFit gyms near me offer nutrition coaching?”
Yes! You read that correctly! The best gyms in your area should offer nutrition coaching.
Even though what we read on the internet is usually correct (hint—that was a joke!).
Functional exercise is not about heavy barbells and kipping pull-ups. It’s about improving your fitness. Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, defined fitness in 100 words: “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar.
Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean-and-jerk and snatch.
“Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics; Pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstands, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc. hard and fast. Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow.
Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”
That was a lot to throw at you. Just note that the first 26 words are all about nutrition.
In any health and fitness routine, nutrition is responsible for 80% of the results. We see it in our clients all the time. Those who do nutrition coaching see 3.5 times the results of those who just exercise.
If you are not eating real whole foods, you are not doing functional movement… period.
People quit gyms when they don’t see results.
If you want the fastest route to results, you need good nutrition and exercise. So why not find a gym where you can get both? At IKAIKA we also offer Nutrition Coaching.
Number 4: Ask yourself whether you’re searching for a “gym near me” or a “personal trainer near me.”
If you’re new to fitness, I highly advise that you start in a one-on-one personal-training environment. Fitness can be intimidating. You will feel like you don’t know what you’re doing.
Don’t get lost in a sea of terminology and equipment you don’t understand.
A gym in your area that offers personal training is the best place to start. You may even find that you enjoy the one-on-one environment more than group training.
At IKAIKA, we only offer personal training services. We find personal training is best for the following:
• Clients dealing with a pre-existing injury.
• Clients new to fitness.
• Older clients that might get neglected if put in a group class with 20- and 30-somethings.
• Clients who want to make sure they’re performing the movements correctly.
• Clients who don’t like a group setting.
So don’t just toss out some search terms and sign up with the first gym you find on Google Maps. Your health is worth your due diligence.
Setting Yourself Up for Success
We don’t rise to the level of our challenges; we fall to the level of our preparation.
“Commitment devices” set us up for long-term success: using our bodies and brains in the way they’ve evolved to be used.
We’re wired to save energy. For thousands of years, our brains and bodies have evolved to seek the path of least friction—in other words, we take the easiest route.
We’re pretty good at it. We scroll through Instagram because it’s easier than getting out of bed. We put off our lunch because it’s cold outside … and then hit the snack machines because there’s no other food nearby.
Building good habits doesn’t mean overcoming bad ones or ramping up our motivation to suddenly change overnight. Those kinds of changes don’t stick. Instead, we need to leverage our natural human tendencies.
A commitment device is a choice you make NOW that will control your actions in the future. For example, if you make an appointment with your trainer, you’ll show up at the gym. If you join a soccer team, you’ll show up for the games. And if you prepare your lunches in advance for the week, you’ll eat them.
Here are two very simple commitment devices you can set up right now:
- Book your appointments or reserve spots at IKAIKA classes for the week.
- Write down what your lunches will be for the week.
- To make it easy, either eat the same thing every day OR plan your dinners for the week and carry the leftovers over to the next day’s lunches.
- Write up your grocery list.
- Go to the store.
- Buy the groceries you’ll need for all of your lunches.
- Set aside one hour for food prep TONIGHT.
- Chop up your vegetables, proteins, nuts, and seeds. Put them into separate containers. Make enough for the full week.
- You don’t need to get fancy: Most of us eat the same thing most of the time, and that’s just fine. Save your variety for dinner.
Commitment devices remove friction and the burden of choice. Do your future self a favor: Make commitments in advance!
