Are you worried about thigh fat? When Margo walked into IKAIKA Personal Fitness in May 2024 she had tried everything.
She had done the diets. She had counted the calories. She had even considered gastric bypass surgery. And through all of it the weight kept coming back, her energy stayed low, and she still could not wear a bathing suit without covering up.
Margo is not alone.
Every week women walk through our doors in Durham NC saying the same thing. They are doing everything right. They are eating less. They are working out. And yet the fat around their inner thighs refuses to move.
If that sounds familiar this blog is for you.
It Is Not About Willpower
Before we talk about inner thigh fat let us get one thing straight.
If you have been struggling to lose fat in your inner thighs you have not failed. You have simply been given the wrong information.
The fitness industry loves to blame your effort. Not enough cardio. Not strict enough with your diet. Not consistent enough.
But here is what nobody tells you.
Inner thigh fat is one of the most stubborn fat deposits in the female body. And after 40 it becomes even harder to shift. Not because you are doing something wrong. But because of four specific reasons that have nothing to do with how hard you are working.
Reason 1: Your Hormones Are Working Against You

After 40 estrogen levels begin to decline. This is a natural part of aging but it has a direct effect on where your body stores fat.
When estrogen drops your body becomes more likely to store fat in the lower body including the hips, thighs, and inner thighs. At the same time your body becomes less efficient at releasing that fat during exercise.
This is why you can do an hour of cardio every day and still see no change in your inner thighs. The hormonal environment in your body after 40 is fundamentally different from what it was in your twenties.
The solution is not more cardio. The solution is building muscle which we will come back to in a moment.
Reason 2: You Are Losing Muscle Faster Than You Think

After 40 women lose between 3 and 5 percent of their muscle mass every decade if they do not actively work to maintain it. After 50 that rate accelerates.
Why does this matter for inner thigh fat?
Muscle is metabolically active tissue. It burns calories even when you are resting. When you lose muscle your metabolism slows down. When your metabolism slows down your body becomes better at storing fat and worse at burning it.
Most women over 40 who are frustrated with stubborn inner thigh fat are also dealing with muscle loss they do not even know is happening. The scale might stay the same or even go up slightly while the ratio of fat to muscle is shifting in the wrong direction.
This is exactly what was happening with Margo. She was following an eating and exercise plan and losing minimal weight. Her frustration was real. But the missing piece was not more effort. It was the right kind of effort.
Reason 3: Cardio Is Making the Problem Worse

This is the one that surprises people most.
If you are doing hours of cardio every week to target your inner thighs you are likely making the problem worse not better.
Here is why.
Cardio burns calories during the workout. But when you finish the workout the calorie burning largely stops. Over time excessive cardio can also break down muscle tissue which further slows your metabolism and makes fat loss harder.
Cardio also increases cortisol. Cortisol is the stress hormone and elevated cortisol is directly linked to fat storage especially in the lower body.
Margo had been stuck in this cycle. Working hard. Feeling disappointed. Working harder. Feeling more disappointed.
The answer was not more cardio. The answer was strength training.
Reason 4: You Are Focused on the Wrong Problem
Inner thigh fat is a symptom. It is not the problem itself.
The problem is a slower metabolism, declining muscle mass, hormonal shifts, and a body that has learned to store fat efficiently because it has never been given a reason to do otherwise.
When you focus only on the inner thighs you miss the bigger picture. You end up doing inner thigh exercises, wearing compression garments, and cutting more calories while the real causes go unaddressed.
Margo understood this after starting at IKAIKA. In her own words she described it perfectly.
I understand this is a long-term approach. Stay the course. Eat better, exercise and keep making healthy choices. The blood pressure will stabilize, energy will increase, and the weight will come off. Stay the course.
That shift in understanding changed everything for her. She went from 230 pounds to 190 pounds. Her blood pressure improved. Her energy came back. She has stronger legs, less stress, and an improved mood. And she is doing it without surgery, without extreme dieting, and without spending hours on a treadmill.
What Actually Works

The four reasons above all point to the same solution.
Build muscle. Improve your metabolism. Give your body a reason to release the fat it has been storing.
This does not mean lifting weights will make you bulky. It means building the kind of functional strength that changes how your body works from the inside out.
It means eating real whole foods that support your hormones and your energy rather than starving yourself on a calorie-restricted plan that leaves you tired and hungry.
And it means being consistent over time rather than chasing quick results that never last.
This is exactly what the IKAIKA Strength Protocol for Health is built around. Train to be strong not skinny. Whole foods over calorie counting. Consistency over perfection.
